Performance Class – Is it for you?

Learn how to get noticed! Performance Class is designed for the dancer who wants to stand out in a group. Performance class is for those who have that pizzazz or those who want it.

Performance Class was originated by Artistic Director Lisa Henry in 2007. Jazz is the primary genre for this group. Students registered for Performance Class must register for at least one jazz dance technique class with Miss Lisa. All levels of Performance Class perform jazz group numbers for performances and competitions. Group dances could also include modern, contemporary, acrobats, variety arts, and other forms of dance. Solos, duets, trios and other numbers can include just about any dance genre. Students also have opportunities to choreograph their own dances, learn performance skills, and perform in the community throughout the year. Performance Class competes in two out-of-town competitions per year.

    Auditions – (during Summer Workshop)

Each year dancers audition to be in Performance Class. Every year we assess the new group coming in to determine how many groups that are needed. Dancers do not automatically move up after a certain age, rather a dancer moves up when she progresses and is able to handle the next level. Dancers will be judged under this criteria:

    • Level of technical ability (turns, posture, pointed feet, travelling combinations, natural rhythm)

    • Level of flexibility (rib cage, feet, hips, legs, back)

    • Level of performance ability (smile, charisma, showmanship)

    • Classroom behavior (Does the dancer want to get better? Does she handle critique?)

    • Age (Does the dancer have the technical skill level for her age group?)

    Summer
All Performance Class dancers are expected to register for at least one jazz dance technique class with Miss Lisa.

    Summer Workshop
All Performance Class dancers are expected to participate in the annual summer workshop held at the dance studio. If you are not already in Performance Class, you must be asked by a Twin Cities School of Dance teacher to participate.

    Groups
There are different levels of Performance Class. However, all dancers must be beyond a beginner jazz level to audition.

Note: Dancers from other dance studios are more than welcome to inquire about auditions. Please call and ask to speak to Julie.
